    Publishing Expertise

    Over the years the Uopen Journals has developed expertise in particular fields of publishing and open access. As an extensive service of Utrecht University Library the Uopen Journals team uses its experience and knowledge to help their affiliated journals and to offer advice on open access publishing to the research community of Utrecht University.

    Uopen Journals is a service provider. Ownership remains with the journal at all times.

    Editorial Workflow

    Our editorial coordinator and publishing assistants support our journal managers with copy flow, contact with possible typesetting partners, website adjustments and many other tasks they have to deal with.

    Business Models & Funding

    A large number of open access journals is funded by an affiliated association, external sponsor or is looking for new ways to cover costs. Our publishing consultant therefore advises our journals on innovative or traditional financial models.

    Software, Tools & Metrics

    With state of the art OJS software provided by our partner Ubiquity Press, we are able to compose innovative websites for our journals. These include metrics and outreach features, which are monitored by our online marketer.


    When managing an open access journal, editors have to comply with various criteria on quality and transparency imposed by organisations such as DOAJ and OASPA. Our publishing team continuously explores these guidelines and assists our boards in following them to advance their journal.

    Indexing & Ranking

    Being found and being valued are two important factors which determine how much a journal stands out in the academic (open access) environment. That’s why we advise and assist our affiliated editors on using indexing services, databases and other search platforms.

    Marketing & Promotion

    Outreach or public engagement is a flourishing initiative in academic publishing. We feel that sharing knowledge with the public can drive progress. Our online marketer supports our journal managers in setting up a marketing strategy or creating campaigns.

    Social Media & Community Building

    A related topic and outreach method is community building through social (and offline) media. A tweet becomes more than just a tweet when you embed it in a content strategy and link it to your journal’s goals. We support our affiliated boards in centering such a community or content strategy around the original research publications.
